Seeing vs. Seeing That: Children's Understanding of Direct Perception and Inference Reports

چکیده

Young children can reason about direct and indirect visual information, but fully mapping this understanding to linguistic forms encoding the two knowledge sources appears come later in development. In English, perception verbs with small clause complements ('I saw something happen') report of an event, while sentential that happened') inferences event. experiments, we ask when 4-9-year-old English-speaking have linked conceptual distinction between inference different expressing distinction. We find that, unlike older or adults, 4-6-year-olds do not recognize see a complement visually-based inference, even syntactic contextual cues make interpretations highly salient. These results suggest prolonged developmental trajectory for learning how syntax like maps their semantics.

Seeing and Understanding People

This manuscript and associated talk gives an historical but not exhaustive overview of work in the Cognitive Vision Lab at the University of Surrey’s Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing. Work concentrates on people, tracking or identifying their actions and interpreting the meaning of those actions. To do this we employ techniques from a variety of sources which include the use of Mu...

Seeing slow and seeing fast: two limits on perception.

Video cameras have a single temporal limit set by the frame rate. The human visual system has multiple temporal limits set by its various constituent mechanisms. These limits seem to form two groups. A fast group comprises specialized mechanisms for extracting perceptual qualities such as motion direction, depth and edges. The second group, with coarse temporal resolution, includes judgments of...

Perception: The seeing ear

Some people perceive colours when they hear words--a phenomenon known as synaesthesia. Brain imaging techniques have revealed the areas of the cortex involved in this rare mingling of the senses.

Motion perception: seeing and deciding.

The primate visual system offers unprecedented opportunities for investigating the neural basis of cognition. Even the simplest visual discrimination task requires processing of sensory signals, formation of a decision, and orchestration of a motor response. With our extensive knowledge of the primate visual and oculomotor systems as a base, it is now possible to investigate the neural basis of...

Seeing and not seeing.

Recent studies revealed that although subterranean mammals inhabit a dark underground environment, they can still perceive light stimuli and use this to entrain their circadian activity rhythm. Regarding spatial orientation, olfactory and tactile cues are employed for short-distance; whereas for long-distance, subterranean mammals employ the earth's magnetic field and self-generated (vestibular...
